How to use PEE to write an essay?
Present
To present the argument, you need to write the argument in the standard format.
Explain
Explaining the argument means that you will be required to:
- Define any terms or words that may need clarification in the argument.
In this stage, you will need to define or explain the technical terms that are present in your argument. In addition, you may need to define words that are semi-technical.
- Give a rationale for the argument
This suggests that you give reasons for the rationale or argument that you wish to present. While you may not agree with the arguments or while you may believe that the rationale is not true, you will still need to give an informal argument for that premise. The conclusion does not require that you do much as the premise that you have already presented would already contain an explanation for the argument.
Evaluate
To evaluate an argument means that you are saying what you think about the argument. In this case, you need to say whether you think the argument is solid. If you believe that the argument is not solid, then you should identify the premise that you believe is false and then give reasons for your belief.

ICE: Introduce, Cite, and Explain Your Evidence
Academic essays have body paragraphs that hold evidence. This evidence supports the main ideas in the topic sentences. These ideas are debatable and therefore, the writers need to introduce, cite, and explain the evidence.
INTRODUCE
Introductory ideas:
- According to John Taggart, …
(Ensure that you use the full name of the author when you first reference the author)
- Taggart explains…
- As Taggart explains…
- Taggart notes the following in his article…
CITE
In this case, you should provide the relevant parenthetical citations for all quotes and paraphrases, but do not create summaries of the pieces that you wish to integrate.
EXPLAIN
Ensure that you explain the quotes that you are using in the essay. Provide an analysis that connects your main idea or topic sentence. Therefore, you are commenting on the evidence so that you can integrate it into the argument that you are making.
