Choosing your learning style

How do we learn?

Many times we may not grasp a concept the way that other persons may do. So, we feel dejected and begin to doubt our abilities. We begin to think that we are not competent or we just are not good enough to live up to the expectations of others. This lowers our self esteem.

But the truth is that we all learn in different ways.

Nothing is wrong with acquiring knowledge in a unique way. The fact that you acquire the knowledge is the most important thing. So do not be discouraged. By the time you get to the end of this article, you will realize that each learner is unique and that it is normal to perceive, communicate, and retain knowledge in different ways.

Types of learners

Visual learning style

Visual learners will grasp a concept through visual aids such as charts, drawings, and taking notes. Some may respond well to the use of pictures or films to present information while others may need to create visual representations of the content.

Auditory learning style

Auditory learners or “aural” learners, grasp information that is spoken. Therefore, these learners will listen or read aloud to themselves. The challenge to the auditory learner is that background noises will pose a distraction and slows the process of comprehending.

Kinesthetic learning style

This learning style involves the use of physical activities or body actions to help with processing information. Kinesthetic learners grasp concepts more readily if they are participating actively in the presentation or if they are watching films, videos, or simulations. These learners are also “tactile” because they learn best though trial and error or when they are placed in a learning environment that is not structured.

Read and write learning style

These learners are more comfortable when they make or take notes. In some cases, this type of learner is like the visual learner.

Four Other Types of Learning Styles

Social or linguistic learners

These learners appreciate educational activities that involve group projects. They work well when they are a part of a team. In addition, they enjoy peer participation as such activities allows them to gain a deeper understanding of a given topic.

Solitary learners

In contrast, the solitary learners are more comfortable when they learn as individuals or on their own.

Nature learners

Nature learners enjoy learning outdoors in a calm and peaceful atmosphere. They enjoy hands-on assignments as nature will provide unique ways to illustrate new concepts.

Logical or analytical learners

These learners rely on using their reasoning and analytical abilities to understand a subject. They find the relationships, reasons, patterns, and outcomes in their work. They will interpret information and draw conclusions or find the logical reasons behind a topic.

Now you may ask:

What is the best style of learning?

There is no best or right way to learn. Each person is unique and will learn in different ways. Some may learn through a single style of learning or others may use multiple ways to learn. The most important thing is that you recognize your learning preference or preferences. When you do this, you will realize that everything else becomes easier. You will no longer feel inadequate or incompetent. Your self-esteem will be higher because you will “fit” into the circle of those who believe they learn more quickly than you do.
