  1. In Walcott’s “Ti-Jean and His Brothers” the mother offers different advice to her children before they face the Devil. Discuss the value of the advice that she gives or does not give to each son. Make references to aspects of the play to support your response.
  2. Each son has a different result because of the way that they respond to the animals. Compare the attitude of Gros-Jean and Mi-Jean and contrast their attitudes to that of Ti-Jean. In addition, discuss the consequences of their response to the animals.
  3. Discuss the value or contribution of Bolom’s character as you seek to explain the roles of the Devil and the mother in the play.
  4. In the play, the mother’s piousness suggests that she is resilient. She suffers hardship and struggles after her she lost her husband but she still believes in God and the work that God does for his people. With close reference to the play, discuss the mother’s resilience, humility, and strength. Compare her values and characteristics to that of Ti-Jean.
  5. The dance with the devil is symbolic of the political hardships in the Caribbean. With close reference to the play, discuss the hardships of colonialism as it affects the main characters in the play.
