There are three main types of writing in a story or novel.
- Narration – helps to move the story along. In other words, the narrative passage tells you what happened.
- Description – allows you to form a mental image of the place or person that the author speaks about.
- Dialogue – represents the speech of the characters and this allows you to build on the image that you have created of the characters or the storyline.
The three modes of writing are combined when writing the story. Dialogue may give description and narration and vice versa.
Did you know?
When you read a story or a novel, you are working in partnership with the author to create meaning for the work. The characters, the struggles that each character faces, and their emotions come alive because you allow these characters to live in your imagination. Therefore, you try to work out the problems or the plot in your mind.
