Exercise 1: Label Each Word

Read the following sentences and label each word with its corresponding part of speech: Noun (N), Pronoun (P), Verb (V), Adjective (Adj), Adverb (Adv), Preposition (Prep), Conjunction (Conj), or Interjection (Int).

1. Nouns: The Names of Things

Nouns can be people, places, things, or ideas. Here are some additional examples:

  • Person: artist, engineer, parent, child
  • Place: city, mountain, beach, restaurant
  • Thing: table, phone, car, computer
  • Idea: democracy, hope, justice, creativity

Example Sentences:

  • The dog ran across the yard.
  • She traveled to the city to visit her friends.
  • He discussed the importance of education.

2. Pronouns: Replacing Nouns

Pronouns replace nouns to avoid repetition. Here are some additional examples:

  • Personal Pronouns: I, you, he, she, it, we, they
  • Possessive Pronouns: mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs
  • Reflexive Pronouns: myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves
  • Demonstrative Pronouns: this, that, these, those
  • Relative Pronouns: who, whom, whose, which, that
  • Indefinite Pronouns: anyone, everyone, someone, nobody, anything

3. Verbs: Expressing Action or State

Verbs describe actions, occurrences, or states of being. Here are some additional examples:

  • Action Verbs: run, jump, speak, sing, write, drive
  • Linking Verbs: am, is, are, was, were, seem, become
  • Helping Verbs: can, will, might, have, has, do
  • Stative Verbs: know, believe, feel, love, belong

Example Sentences:

  • She writes in her journal every morning.
  • He is happy with the results of the project.
  • We have completed the assignment on time.

4. Adjectives: Describing Nouns

Adjectives modify nouns, providing more detail or description. Here are more examples:

  • Descriptive Adjectives: beautiful, quick, tall, noisy, soft
  • Quantitative Adjectives: few, many, several, some, all
  • Demonstrative Adjectives: this, that, these, those
  • Possessive Adjectives: my, your, his, her, its, our, their

Example Sentences:

5. Adverbs: Modifying Verbs, Adjectives, or Other Adverbs

Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. Here are additional examples:

  • Manner: quickly, slowly, loudly, quietly
  • Time: now, then, soon, always, yesterday
  • Place: here, there, everywhere, nowhere
  • Degree: very, too, quite, almost, really

Example Sentences:

  • He answered the question correctly.
  • She is very tired after the long journey.
  • They played the game quite well.

6. Prepositions: Showing Relationships

Prepositions show relationships between other words in a sentence, typically indicating location, time, or direction. Here are some more examples:

  • Location: on, in, under, above, between, beside
  • Time: at, during, before, after, until, since
  • Direction: to, from, towards, across, through
  • Other Relationships: with, without, for, about, of

Example Sentences:

  • The cat is under the table.
  • I have a meeting at 3 PM.
  • He walked through the park on his way home.

7. Conjunctions: Joining Words, Phrases, or Clauses

Conjunctions connect words, phrases, or clauses. Here are more examples:

  • Coordinating Conjunctions: and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet
  • Subordinating Conjunctions: because, although, if, unless, since, while
  • Correlative Conjunctions: either…or, neither…nor, not only…but also

Example Sentences:

  • I wanted to go to the beach, but it started raining.
  • She didn’t like the movie, although the reviews were positive.
  • You can either come with us or stay at home.

8. Interjections: Expressing Emotion

Interjections are words or phrases that express strong emotions or exclamations. Here are additional examples:

  • Exclamations of surprise: Wow! Oh my! Gosh!
  • Exclamations of pain or discomfort: Ouch! Ugh!
  • Exclamations of joy: Yay! Hooray!
  • Exclamations of disbelief: No way! Really?

Example Sentences:

  • Wow, that was an amazing performance!
  • Ugh, I can’t believe I lost my keys again!
  • Yay, we finally won the game!
